William Fowler profiles painter Sam Gilliam.

Fowler notes that in recent years Gilliam had been working in relative obscurity despite the fact that in the 60s and 70s he "was considered one of abstract art’s great innovators, one of the first painters to break the frame." Gilliam's work will be on view at David Kordansky's Gallery at Frieze Masters, October 14-17, 2015.
