Jennifer Samet interviews painter Pat de Groot about her work and career.
De Groot comments: "I work with what I see. That’s what there was to do. They are about creating the feeling you get from the thing — from what it is out there. Even though the paintings are all done in the studio, they are a result of being in the kayak, and getting a feel for the water. They are done from what is happening: the color, the wave action, the wind, the sky, and the horizon, although that changes a lot in the course of a day. I have to move with the changes until I get something that looks pretty much all right, unless my hand carries me to a place I reach by accident. Accident, and how to use it, is an important part of the process."
