Maureen Mullarkey reviews Michael Fried's new book The Moment of Caravaggio. Mullarkey excoriates both Fried's content and writing style contending that "text validates Irwin Panofsky’s contention, stated in that marvelous essay “Iconography and Iconography: An Introduction to the Study of Renaissance Art, that “synthetic intuition” may be better developed in a talented layman than in an erudite scholar."
