Joanna Moorhead marks the passing of surrealist painter Leonora Carrington (1917-2011), "one of Britain's finest – and neglected – surrealists." Carrington, whose artistic company included Max Ernst, Picasso, Dali, and Max Ernst, settled in Mexico where she lived and worked until her death. In an excellent 2007 article on the artist Moorhead quotes Carrington: "You don't decide to paint. It's like getting hungry and going to the kitchen to eat. It's a need, not a choice."
