Julie Torres discusses the paintings in her exhibition Ghost in the Machine at Storefront Bushwick, on view through August 5, 2012.
Of her process Torres comments: "I sort of bang my head against the wall for hours and weeks and months until something happens and when the thing happens, it's bigger than me… it's a joy. I do feel like friction is a big part of what makes something work, and if there isn't any friction, if it comes too easily then there must be something wrong. but then of course there are those magical paintings that just happen. The title painting, Ghost in the Machine is a painting that just happened immediately… so I guess there are no rules to doing this." She continues: "everything is action, I'm not anticipating any moves – I'm just moving."
