Dubnau comments: “one of the most interesting aspects of portraiture is the idea … if you’re painting a particular person who lives at a particular time… you’re painting their visage but you’re really also painting the zeitgeist of the times which is inscribed upon their faces and the clothing they’re wearing and their body language and their surroundings. So you’re capturing a moment in time in amber; it’s not just that person. To me that’s maybe the most powerful thing about looking at portraits. It’s something I’m thinking about a lot.”
