Kelly Robbins interviews painter Chris Martin.
Martin comments: "I love painting and I love learning about painting from all the different parts of the world and from the different parts of history, and I’m very aware of a dialogue that I have with my friends and comrade painters here in New York City and Europe – my contemporaries. Lately, I’ve been obsessed with Marsden Hartley… again. I have all these books and I’m thinking about Hartley all the time. I went to visit a friend yesterday. I walked into his loft and there was this stunning Hartley painting I had never seen. It was very moving and also very affirming. In that way, one feels a connection with the ancestors that is real. And then one has a responsibility on the other end to meet with young people who are just becoming painters and maybe one can help out in some way or pass things along."
