Sultan writes that she was "thinking about the modernist credo of 'the integrity of the picture plane,' and why it wasn't of importance to me; matter of fact, I take a kind of glee in illusionism, in the sense of the thing depicted popping off the surface of the painting… I agree wholeheartedly with Greenberg that there is an 'apparent contradiction' in the essential flatness of that window that is the picture surface but can contain illusion. For me, it leaves an opening to play with the back and forth that illusionism provides; it does not proscribe it."
