Lisa Pressman photoblogs a studio visit with painter Fran Shalom.
Shalom writes of her work "My works balance the formal with the playful, paring down shapes and ideas into their most basic forms. It is a search for clarity and humor... But, like life itself, there is an undercurrent of conflict beneath the whimsy, as reflected in the tension and interaction between the shapes."
Kris Chatterson photo blogs images from the exhibition Martha Clippinger: Hopscotch at Elizabeth Harris Gallery, on view through February 4, 2012.
The gallery notes that Clippinger works "reside somewhere between painting and sculpture. Inherent imperfections of her reclaimed materials provide a rich framework for playful constructions characterized by wonky geometries and irregular symmetries." Mario Naves also has an excellent short review of the show on his blog Too Much Art.
Nancy Natale visits four painting exhibitions in New York: Debra Ramsay: Desire Lines at Blank Space (thorough May 19), Reed Danziger at McKenzie Fine Art (through April 28), Catherine Lee: Quanta at Galerie Lelong (through April 28), and Lush Geometry at DM Contemporary featuring work by: Steven Baris, Richard Bottwin, Carole Freysz Gutierrez, Joanne Mattera and Louise P. Sloane (through June 1, 2012).
Edited by artist Brett Baker, Painters' Table highlights writing from the painting blogosphere as it is published and serves as a platform for exploring blogs that focus primarily on the subject of painting.
